We also hold farmer outreaches in collaboration with stakeholders such as farmer groups, non-governmental organizations, and farmer cooperatives among others. We offer training to farmers for capacity enhancement on sustainable agriculture practices and as part of our social activities. We train them on how to make their own organic compost for soil amendment and by supporting them, we have realized they have potential to acquire farm skills for development and resilience to climate change
Our training is participatory and incorporates methodologies of Popular Education model – a critical consciousness raising, and participatory education for community engagement. The model by the Brazilian educator, Paulo Freire unveils the power of often left out ordinary people at the bottom of the pyramid to explore their situation and cultivate their strengths for collective action to end dependency on expensive and imported sources of fertilizers, foster sustainable development and enable their equal participation in their families and communities.
Out of experience, we have seen more women participating in the training activities. It has come to our attention that nutrition problems are women problems and there is a positive correlation between women and food. Their turn up and participation in practical demonstration is clear picture of how they embrace our model that empowers the community to do things for themselves.
